Emmelie Brownlee

Head of communications

I use my digital communications skills and built environment experience to tell our story and inspire change for a future where retrofit at scale is a reality.

What I do at Energiesprong UK

As part of our small but mighty team, I lead on all our communications as well as being hands-on in making them happen!

A typical day includes anything from designing effective strategies through to crafting compelling content and engaging audiences on social media. Using my expertise, I’ve helped us grow our audiences and reach new people.

A recent highlight was developing our #RetrofitDisruptors campaign, which showcased the organisations shaking up the sector to deliver warm, affordable, ultra low-carbon homes.

What I did before Energiesprong UK

I’ve got more than 14 years’ experience in the sustainability sector, having started at The Schumacher Institute – a ‘think-and-do tank’ in Bristol - in 2010 after graduating.

I moved to Bioregional in 2015, where I honed my digital communications skills and understanding of the built environment sector over five years. This London-based charity is best known for its role in BedZED, the UK’s first large-scale eco-village.

After a stint at a green PR agency, I came back to the non-profit world in 2021 to help tackle what I see as one of the biggest – but most impactful – sustainability challenges in the UK: retrofitting our homes!

My biggest achievement

My first job was to help document Bristol’s history of environmental action. There were so many stories to tell, I ended up writing a book – Bristol’s Green Roots. Seeing the power of storytelling is what inspired me to move into communications.
